Terrific Tuesday – Tone on Tone

Hi Angels!

I decided on one of my favorite techniques to share today, tone on tone or monochromatic creating. My absolute favorite is white on white but today’s card is more of a cream color. Let’s take a look….

I just love how this card turned out, simply elegant. This would make great wedding thank-yous for a winter wedding.

There are quite a few new card creators in some of my groups so let’s do a step by step on this card.

  • I selected an ivory or cream cardbase, standard A2 which equals a 4 1/4 by 5 1/2 inch card or half a sheet of standard 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock folded in half.
  • The mat piece is Canson 140 lb watercolor paper cut 4 x 5 1/4. (Watercolor paper tends to be more off white thus the ivory card design.)
  • I secured Taylored Expressions Nordic Snowflake stencil with some masking tape over the mat. Using Nuvo Glimmer Paste I applied or “buttered” a thin layer over the stencil with a palette knife. Carefully remove the stencil, wash immediately with warm soapy water & set aside to dry. Set your mat piece aside to dry too.
  • To keep the monotone effect, I cut the Catherine Pooler Designs Snowflake Mini Cover Plate die out of another piece of Canson 140 lb watercolor paper and the thank-you sentiment that comes with the die out of champagne colored pearl cardstock.
  • Once the stenciled snowflakes are dry you can build the card. Adhere the snowflake mat to the card base.
  • Use thin foam strips applied to the back of the Snowflake frame to pop it up off the card & adhere to the mat layer.
  • I used Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive Clear Drying Craft Glue to adhere the thank-you die cut.
  • Finally I punched a small glitter circle & applied to the center of the snowflake in the frame to carry the glitter effect to the front.

Some more tips for working with tone on tone:

  • Keep your colors of the same shade or hue. You don’t want a red-orange with a red-violet as they will clash a bit. My exception to this is I will quite often use silver, black or gray words with my white on white designs as well as sometimes adding a layer of silver to the design.
  • The biggest trick for monotone cards to work is adding depth & interest. The glimmer paste glittery snowflakes create a lot of interest in this card without overwhelming the design. Embossing folders work great too. Popping up an element adds more depth. Vary the types of paper, mat, glossy, metallic, glitter etc. It is perfectly alright to add a stamped sentiment in an ink to compliment the color scheme or even black, gray or brown allows the sentiment to stand out more. Adding pearls, rhinestones, sequins & ribbon in the same color tone adds more interest too.

I hope you enjoyed this peek into tone on tone creating. Pull out your favorite color & see what you can create with one color family.

Live Laugh Love

I hope everyone is having a fabulous week so far. I am having fun working on my Wild & Wonderful Summer projects. A lot of going with the flow creating happening here.

I decided to pop in & share the final card from the Tonic Studios Kit 21 class this week. I decided to mix up my class a bit and add in other stamps & products this time. I have been getting the kits because A. they are a fabulous value and B. so I am familiar with the Tonic Studios & Nuvo products. When you have done direct sales for over 10 years representing certain products, it’s time to play and learn what wonderful things are available when you go independent. That includes mixing companies & products into the creative process.

This card has a mixture of elements on it. Let’s take a look.

Card Basics:

  • Cut a card base from Catalina Splash 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″
  • Cut a Turbo Teal layer 4″ x 5 1/2″
  • Cut a Lemon Drop Layer 3 3/4″ x 5 1/2″
  • On the Lemon Drop Layer I used the Distress Stencil in the kit and the Nuvo Embellishment Mousse that was included to add the hearts.
  • After the hearts were dry, it needed a bit more interest so I took my Romantic Script background stamp from My Favorite Things and stamped it over the Lemon Drop Layer in Lemon Drop ink.
  • Cut Spellbinders Shapeabilities Live Laugh Love dies out of scraps of Cool Pool, Turbo Teal & Catalina Splash and adhered to the card.
  • I used Nuvo Glitter Gloss to highlight everything with a bit of sparkle.

Take a look at the products you have on hand & see how you can mix them up while you are creating.

Thanks for stopping by.

Wild & Wonderful Summer

Hi Everyone!

Let’s get this blog up & running again!

I have a new theme for the next 100 days, June 1st – Sept. 8th.

Summer!

I will be playing in several different types of art & media from standard cards to hand lettering, Bible journaling/handmade books to mixed media. I have goals to post to the blog, do some live videos & of course share everyday here or on FB.

My Wild & Wonderful theme runs through 3 areas of life and is as much personal time as it is sharing time.

Worship – time in God’s Word, Bible study & journaling, plus hand lettering Bible verses.

Wild Art – joy in creating & playing in different areas & sharing art, tips & techniques.

Wonderful Life – celebrating each day & finding ways to share more blessings & brightening up someone’s day.

Today’s card is the 1st for this Monday’s class featuring Tonic Studio’s Craft Kit #21 which they labeled as Distressed Detail and I think of more as Shabby Chic. I took one of the element dies & created an elegant card perfect for a wedding or anniversary or just simply to brighten somenone’s day. It would be easy to change out the sentiment for several occasions.

Card Basics:

  • Deep Lilac base 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″
  • Lavender Fusion layer 3 3/4″ x 5 1/2″
  • Brushed Silver layer 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
  • Die cut Brushed Silver on both ends with small border type die in Tonic Studios Craft Kit 21 or similar die of choice and assemble together.
  • Die cut Lovely day sentiment in Brushed silver & border in Deep Lilac & adhere together. Pop onto Brushed Silver mat layer.
  • Add rhinestones or gemstones of choice.

Note: Feel free to use this card as a sketch or jumping off point to use the items in your supplies to create a similar look.

Summer is a great time to work on mini goals. I challenge you to find a goal you want to work on for the summer. Maybe it’s reading a couple of books, relaxing more, ramping up your exercise, spending more time with family, taking a class in something you’ve always wanted to learn. What will you do with your summer? List your goal(s) and how you want to tackle them.

Have a Wild & Wonderful Summer!
